UNICARE Project

The UNICARE project, led by EUIT Centre Universitari, aims to assess the mental health status and emotional wellbeing of students at the Terrassa Universitaria Urban Campus. This initiative involves the active participation of both teaching staff and students from the Occupational Therapy and Nursing degrees at the EUIT.

Students enrolled in the subjects “Foundations of Scientific Methodology in Health Sciences” and the applied Mental Health subjects across both degrees will play a key role in all phases of the project, from data collection through to the analysis and interpretation of results, always under the supervision of teaching staff. The ultimate goal is to understand the habits and routines of campus students — such as diet, rest, physical activity, social life, participation in occupations, substance use, and screen time — in order to identify the factors that may be negatively affecting their mental health.

The project arises in response to the sustained rise in mental health problems among young people, a situation that has been further aggravated by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Various studies indicate that university students are a particularly vulnerable group, due to factors such as academic stress, distance from family networks, and economic instability.

UNICARE is also an educational opportunity for EUIT students, who will have the chance to take part in a real project linked to mental health research and health education. This experience allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, work within an interdisciplinary team, and develop competencies relevant to their future profession. Furthermore, the project is aligned with the municipal strategy to make Terrassa an inclusive and sustainable city for learning, contributing to the creation of a healthier university campus that is committed to the wellbeing of its students.

The results obtained will serve as the basis for designing, in a second phase planned for 2026, a health education intervention programme aimed at addressing the needs identified.
